After her divorce, the lawyer Ahlam leaves Mansoura and returns to her birthplace in Bab al-Mutawalli, one of the gates of Old Cairo. She finds herself forced to look after her property there after discovering that her cousin has been stealing from her, and she enters into fierce struggles to protect her rights.
